Hemp is a strain of the ‘cannabis sativa’ plant species. It is one of the oldest domesticated crops known to man used for its nutritious edible seeds, clothing, paper, textiles, and cordage for thousands of years. The well-known CBD (cannabidiol) is derived from hemp.
To be classified as hemp, a cannabis plant must contain less than 0.3% THC by volume.
CBD is short for CannaBiDiol - an active chemical compound (one of 113+ cannabinoids) in the cannabis plant.
CBD is not a pharmaceutical, meaning it won’t interfere with other medications. Some studies have actually shown that CBD can enhance the effectiveness of other medications, such as pain killers.
Cannabaceae is a small family of flowering plants including Cannabis (hemp and marijuana). Cannabis Sativa is the scientific name of the cannabis plant. Hemp (high in CBD, low in THC) and marijuana (high in THC, low in CBD) are two different “varieties” of the cannabis plant, like cousins.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are just two of the 80+ cannabinoids found in the Cannabis sativa plant.
• THC is the compound that imparts that ‘high’ feeling and has many medicinal qualities.
• CBD has most of the medicinal attributes of THC yet lacks the psychoactive properties.
Our ECS is the collection of cell receptors and corresponding molecules located throughout the body – in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells. Its goal is homeostasis, or optimal balance, within the body.
These receptors are involved with a wide range of physiological processes including appetite, pain, memory, mood, stress, sleep, and immune function.
Our body naturally produces its own endocannabinoids to support our ECS. We get most endocannabinoids from food, especially omega-3 fatty acids. But similar to other nutrients, we can sometimes become deficient and need extra support.
This is where cannabis comes in.
Cannabis produces phytocannabinoids (phyto meaning plant) that interacts with our ECS.
Delta 8 is an isomer of CBD and another cannabinoid found in hemp and hemp extracts.
Delta 8 (Δ8) is 100% hemp-derived and federally legal. Not to be confused with Delta 9 THC (Δ9) which is the cannabinoid famous for the intoxicating effects of marijuana. However, Δ8 is not as intoxicating and has many promising uses.
Δ8 is a very pure, very concentrated product.
Similar to Δ9, it has psychoactive effects and will get you high, albeit with some small but crucial differences:
The psychoactive effects of Δ8 are less intense and said to last for a shorter period compared to the effects of Δ9.
The earliest written record of the use of cannabis appears in ancient China around 6000 B.C., shortly after human civilization arose.
Here's a brief timeline of CBD, hemp, and cannabis.
